The Newman community attempts to be compassionate as our God is compassionate. Compassion, derived from the Latin words pati and cum, meaning “to suffer with,” is the heart of the Christian life in a world governed far too long by principles of power and destructive control. Compassion asks us to go where it hurts, to enter into places of pain, to share in brokenness, fear, confusion, and anguish. Compassion means full immersion in the condition of being human. It is a force and action, the expression of God’s love for us and our love for God and one another.
